This is what I had sought, without much luck, in trying to ascertain the strengths of the game prior to purchasing it. More precisely I wanted to give a sense of the totality of the game, something more than you get from the various indicators (of varying quality) that you come across on the fan sites and boards. For these reasons I set about detailing a chronologically ordered sequence of campaigns and missions (with a few little digressions) which I'm now going to bring to a conclusion.

The obvious star of WOV, and of the Strike Fighters series, is the F-4 Phantom. So what better way to finish of my Linebacker 2 missions, than with a Carrier based Phantom campaign. These shots depict missions with the F-4J of VMFA-333, flying from the USS America. The experience of this campaign was comparable to the F-4B campaign I describe here earlier, with the exception that the air defences over Hanoi are a whole lot hairier in the 1970s. Special mention must also go to the new(ish) hi-res F-4 pits (available at combat ace in Add-on aircraft/cold-war aircraft/F-4 the section) which have produced an even more evocative experience than the previous hi-res pits, which were themselves a big enhancement of the original pits.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Swordsmen Strikes

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Although I've previously described flying the A-6A Intruder, it wasn't until reaching Linebacker 2 that I flew a full Intruder campaign – with the VA-145 'Swordsmen' from the USS Ranger (and using another great skin from Fist of the Fleet). As the intruder is subsonic and lacks defensive armament, you really have to fly your missions by getting in and getting out, without any loitering. In fact some of the most exciting moments in this campaign were achieved in leaving the target zone. With flack, SAMs and Migs buzzing around, the simulation won't let you warp to safer waypoints, forcing you (rewardingly I think) to fly your way out of trouble.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Linebacker 2 Aardvarks

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Another of the nicest add-on aircraft for WOV, and the SF series, is the F-111. Coupled with a separate add-on cockpit available here, the Aardvark makes for an great addition to WOV campaigns. In 1968 Operation Combat Lancer saw the introduction of the F-111 to Vietnam. For my installation of WOV, I added the 430 TFS at Tahkli RTAFB as a unit in Linebacker 2. Flying these Aardvark missions in WOV, you really get a sense of what a powerful aircraft it was in the company of older cold-war planes. An online history of the F-111 in SEA is here. By default, WOV provides some of the F-105G 'Wild Weasel' squadrons in the Linebacker campaigns, but with the F-105D as a stand-in. With a few quick edits its possible to resolve this with the AD Thuds.

A history of the Wild Weasels can be found here.

The Wild Weasel squadrons, tasked with destroying North Vietnamese SAM sites, were first represented by F-100F, a two seat variant of the Super Sabre, before the introduction of the two seat F-105F and G in 1966 and 1967 respectively. With the Linebacker 105G campaign set up strictly with 'Iron Hand' missions, you might think the experience could become repetitive, but simultaneously seeking out and dodging SAMs made this the most difficult campaign I'd ever flown in the game.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Scooter Reprise

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Earlier, I recounted a campaign I'd flown with a USMC A-4E. I went back to the Skyhawk for Linebacker 1, flying a Navy A4-F of VA-164 off the deck of the USS Hancock. Though the Scooter lacks the speed of other jets in the sim, there's something which really gives the little plane a lot of character, making it a whole lot of fun to fly. During this campaign I was directed to the most interesting target I think I've found so far in WOV – the power station at Hong Gai. As you can see in the next screenshot, I wasn't the only one sent after it!
Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Linebacker 1 'SLUF' Campaign

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

The Vought A-7 Corsair II 'SLUF' (Short Little Ugly F***ER) was conceived as a replacement for the Skyhawk, with greater range and payload. Fairly obviously Vought drew upon the design of the Crusader, in doing so expediting the development time for the aircraft. The SLUF's turbofan engines were the same as those for the F-111, minus the afterburner, giving it a rate of fuel consumption 1/6th that of the F-100 at equivalent thrust.
The A-7 entered the conflict in Vietnam in 1967. In WOV, flyable, carrier-based SLUF units (A-7A & B) are available in Linebacker 1 and 2. The feel of the aircraft in WOV, being a pretty nimble attack plane but at a disadvantage in air-to-air combat, accords with the noted observation of SLUF pilots... that the Corsair "is not very fast, but it sure is slow" .

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

F-104 Starfighter Campaign

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Its been a while since I've updated the blog, but in that time I've remained flying in WOV, creating something of a backlog of campaigns and aircraft to describe. I'll try and detail those over the next few days. Firstly, I'm going to describe one last Rolling Thunder campaign before moving on to Linebacker 1 and 2.

One aircraft that was included in Thirdwire's Strike Fighters series but not included in WOV was the F-104 Starfighter. The aircraft is however available to download from Thirdwire's site and though it is intended for Strike Fighters Gold, simply placing a copy of the WOV.exe, renamed to SFG.exe, in the directory to which you unpack the download, will enable its installation in WOV. With a camo skin from Marcfighters site and a Hi-res pit from Combatace I was pretty happy having this plane in my installation. The next step was to alter my Rolling Thunder campaign to include it.

At this point I should mention that the Thirdwire model is an F-104G, while it was the F-104C which saw service in SEA. Furthermore, there is a perfectly good F-104C and improved F-104C-10 and Combatace. I stuck with the Thirdwire model despite a couple of visual inconsistencies (refuelling probe etc) albeit, renamed to F-104C.

After reading up on the history of the F-104C in Vietnam here, I modified my Rolling Thunder campaign to include F-104C's of the 476th TFS 'Blue Knights'. It proved to be quite a challenging campaign with a mixture of air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

F-8 Crusader - Last of the Gunfighters.

One of the best things about this sim is the dog fights. As the guy at the gunfighters page says, missile-only aircraft were at a disadvantage in this environment and though the F-8 was equipped with sidewinders, guns were its primary weapon; Crusader pilots had the choice.

This was my last Rolling Thunder campaign before moving on to Linebacker 1. Whilst the campaign involved VF-211 Crusaders from the deck of the older Essex class carrier, USS Hancock, there are some shots mixed in here of single missions with VF-111, from flights used to make the video above.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

New Mytai Phantom Skins.

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

In the last couple of days I've had great fun flying with some new skins by Mytai and thought I'd share some shots. Unknown to me however, was the presence of RAAF CAC Avon Sabres at Ubon RTAFB. The Sabres were originally based at Ubon from 1962, as part of a SEATO agreement to reinforce Thai security from threats along the Laotian border. Following the build up of US forces after 1964, Ubon became known as 'Kangaroo Valley'. On occasion, returning F-4 pilots would be intercepted by the RAAF Sabres, and startled by the profile of the Australian aircraft, given its similarity to that of the Mig 17.
For a fuller account of the Ubon Sabres look here.

The neat Sabre mod for the strike fighters franchise let me re-enact this chapter of avaiation history. Rather than add RAAF Sabre units to the existing WOV campaigns, I opted for creating a new one, simply titled 'Ubon Sabres'. I restricted the operational range of the Sabre in an attempt to guide the random generation of missions to more realistic results, and limited mission roles to recon, armed recon, and escort. The campaign acknowledged the limited mission types but sent me over the nearest enemy target, which despite range restrictions proved to be Khe Phat in Vietnam. At least this livened things up a bit, providing a 'what if?' scenario.

Also, I know the livery is incorrect here, maybe I'll try my hand at an authentic No.79 squadron skin some time...

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Martin B-57 Canberra - Rolling Thunder campaign.

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

The Martin B-57 Canberra launched the first strike against North Vietnam on 2 March 1965. This mission marked the opening of the 'Rolling Thunder' campaign. By default, the B-57 is included in WOV as an AI aircraft and you routinely encounter their flights in the course of the game. Converting the B-57 to a flyable aircraft is easy enough, as detailed here. Similarly, once you've got the B-57 flying, a few edits to the campaign files and the already existing AI squadrons are yours to start a campaign with.

These screenshots depict a campaign flying the Canberra for the 13th BS 'Grim Reapers'. Note the new hi-res runway textures available at combatace and the switch in livery as the campaign progresses, from bare metal to camouflage.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

A-1H Skyraider - carrier based campaign

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Before I embarked on the Linebacker campaigns there were a couple of Rolling Thunder options I had to try. Not so apparent in these shots is the great visual enhancement of pixel shaded water animations, provided in the latest patch. Anyway, here's a start:
RAAF Canberra B.2.

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

At some point I might make a campaign for the RAAF Canberra as I have done for another RAAF presence during the SEA conflict (to be described shortly). The Skyraider is one of my favourite add-ons for WOV and flying CAS missions in this aircraft is my favourite 'Single mission' option when I haven't got the time or inclination to fly a campaign.

While the Skyraider proved vulnerable to North Vietnamese SAMs, at least one Mig-17 came off the worse for a scrap with Skyraiders from the USS Intrepid. You can hear a recording of the debriefing from this extraordinary flight here.

Quite unintentionally, I managed to repeat this feat myself in WOV, with a USAF Skyraider.

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Rolling Hunder!

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Its like a Sabre, except its super! The F-100 'Hun' Super Sabre, along with the F-4 and F-105 is perhaps the most recognised American fast mover from the early stages of the south east asian war. Like the Phantom campaign I described here earlier, flying a Hun campaign in WOV is really enjoyable for the variety of missions it presents - from strike missions to Mig CAP to 'Iron Hand' SAM suppression. The paintwork on the Hun changes from bare-metal to camouflage after 1966 and as represented in these screenshots, the default skins look really nice (though I am using some add-on camouflage fuel tanks to complete the appearance).

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Vietnam Tomcats 1975

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Given the F-14 has recently flown its last cat-launched flight I figured the place of the Tomcat in WOV was worth describing here.
Extending the historical role of the F-14 in Vietnam (providing air-cover in 1975 during operation Frequent Wind), the 'Vietnam Tomcats' campaign add-on lets you explore the possibility of air combat over Vietnam between Tomcats and VPAF Migs. I had a lot of fun flying a short campaign with this add-on, making a few little changes to accurately reflect the Tomcat squadrons which flew from the USS Enterprise over Vietnam in 1975, VF-1 and 2.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Expanding the world of WOV: Add-on campaigns and terrains.

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Over the past few weeks I've spent a little time tinkering with add-on terrains for WOV. A number of terrains and campaigns have been developed by add-on developers for the original Strike Fighters franchise from which WOV descends, and with a little text editing almost all these terrains can be configured to work in WOV. I've played with the Korea and Solomons (WWII) terrains and campaigns but what I have found most impressive is the Bearing Straits mod from Majorleesaerodrome.

Bearing Straits

I've set up two campaigns (both available from combatace) over this terrain, 'Long Cold winter', set in 1957 (with units including the F-86 Sabre, F-11 Tiger and F-9J cougar ) and 'Danger! Bearig Straits', set in 1972. I've tweaked these campaigns a little, adding RN carrier units flying the Seahawk, Scimitar and Skyraider to 'Long Cold Winter', and the RAF's F.Mk6 Lighting to Danger! Bearing Straits'. Both campaigns are built on the premise of a short shooting war (though restrained from going nuclear) between the USSR and NATO over Alaskan territory.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

More SEATO than NATO but I couldn't resist!

Vietnam 1984

Equally impressive in expanding the WOV experience is the 'Vietnam 1984' add-on. Using the terrain and carriers of the main game, Vietnam 1984 introduces more modern aircraft including the FA-18A and F-15C alongside RAF F-4Js and RAAF Mirages (amongst others). Ignoring the unrealistic premise of a 5-power conflagration over South East Asia in the era of Regan and Chernenko, this add-on succeeds convincingly in giving WOV a modernised makeover. Well chosen pre-flight samples add to the period-feel of the add-on too! I haven't altered the campagns for this one, but I have been using it as an excuse to download and try out some great add-ons that belong outside the 64-73 timeframe of WOV, such as the A-10, F-15A and Mig-25.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

USMC A4-E Campaign

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Flying the Skyhawk in Rolling Thunder made for a very different kind of experience to my earlier campaigns. Lacking the speed of the previous jets I'd flown, the strike missions in the A-4 actually had a greater sense of immersion - I think I certainly improved my evasive flying skills against SAMs and other ground threats. The campaign finished abruptly when I accidentally corrupted my campaign file so this one is going down on my pilot record as unsuccessful, but plenty of fun!
Here's a great site for information regarding the A-4.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

F4-J Versus Mig 21

Here's a video depicting a Mig CAP mission in the F-4J Phantom. The mission takes place over North Vietnam in 1970 and runs into a flight of Mig 21s. Four kills are achieved, the first two by Sparrow at long range, then one with guns at close range (you can hear the IR growl of the Sidewinder I was about to use before realising I was getting close enough to use the centreline gunpod). The last kill is another long range Sparrow hit. I find Sparrows easiest to use with the radar set to bore-sighted, all you have to do is keep pointing in the right direction to maintain radar-lock and the Sparrow does the rest!

In this video I'm using the Hi-res F-4J pit by Batman1978 from CombatAce and another great Fist of the Fleet skin.

Intruder Alert! - My 100th mission

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Just as I was about to start a new Rolling Thunder campaign, I noticed I was nearing the 100 mission mark. For the 100th mission I chose to fly a strike mission in the A6-A Intruder, one aircraft I haven't paid nearly enough attention to so far in this sim.
The assigned mission was to attack and destroy the fuel tanks at a VPAF airfield. After crossing the coast we flew in real low, just skimming the tops of trees to avoid SAMs. We came in so low in fact, that I misjudged my approach to the target and had to go round for a second run. The second run was spot on, but as I made my way back to the coast I became so pre-occupied with avoiding SAMS that I didn't notice the Mig-21 behind me. He shot me up pretty bad, but even with a missing rudder and aileron I could still limp to a safe eject point. It wasn't to be though. Not content with the inevitable destruction already inflicted upon my Intruder, the Mig pilot came around a second time, slicing of my vertical stabilizer with a short burst of gunfire. I managed to eject just seconds before the aircraft slammed into the ground. The mission summary declared me MIA - until the next mission of course, by which time I will have swum back to Da Nang!

The awsome VA-35 skin depicted here is from Fist of the Fleet (link at left).

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Rolling Thunder in the F-4B

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

I finally got round to completing what is probably the main selling point of Wings Over Vietnam, a carrier based F-4 Phantom campaign. The campaign was Rolling Thunder, flying the F4-B with VF-21 off the deck of the USS Midway. This campaign was really the most fun I've had in WOV so far, especially the close dogfights, though I got a couple of Migs at long range with Sparrows too. As the campaign wore on, I got assigned more strike missions, encountering less Migs but much stiffer resistance from the ground.

These next few screenshots sum-up the campaign: You can see one SAM had my name on it - I bailed out and waited a nervous second for the mission summary to see if I'd end up a POW, instead I was hospitalised and the campaign continued. On the last flight my wingman wasn't as lucky, and only some evasive manoeuvres saved me from the barrage of SAMs that followed....

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Further Discoveries: Skins and Trees!

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

I'd known of Mytai 01's Phantom skins from posts around the WOV/SFP1 boards. Unfortunately for me, his site has been out of action since I got WOV, until now that is! As I hope these screenshots reveal, the Phantom skins from Mytai's site are awesome. My other discovery for today, which you can see in this set of screenshots, was the development of trees for WOV by Deuces who also made the surface tiles I use. The trees aren't listed on Deuces site (SFmods) as far as I can tell, however there is a direct link in this post from the SimHQ Forum. They really enhance the feel of the sim. In fact, I think it feels like a whole new sim now!

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

The Versatile Thud

F-105D over 'Thud Ridge', north-west of Hanoi. I didn't know too much about the F-105 'Thud' before flying in WOV, but I really like the feel of the aircraft in the sim. The campaign involved mostly strike and SEAD missions, but like the real thing I got to take out a few Migs too! In the Vietnam war, F-105s downed 27.5 Migs with the 0.5 being shared with the crew of an F-4D (Source).

Here's some shots from my Thud campaign.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

This site is a great resource for F-105 info.

Strike missions with the A-5B Vigilante

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

The Vigilante is one aircraft that's always captured my imagination. When I was a kid I'd see pictures of the Vigi on the deck of carriers and be amazed at its size and elegance. It also had an enigmatic appeal, given it's not as well publicised as some other aircraft of the period. While the Vigi only flew over Vietnam in a reconnaissance role, as the RA-5C, the A-5B mod by CZ Monty for WOV and SFP1 allows you to simulate its originally conceived role, as a low-level high-speed attack aircraft. I'm flying the A-5B with hires RVAH-13 skins from Fist of the Fleet, off the deck of the Enterprise by Capun and Co. (see links at left for both).

Here's some shots from my fictional Vigi strike campaign, which I edited into the stock Linebacker II campaign.

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Here's a video I made of an A-5B strike mission against a North Vietnamese airfield.

And here's a short video I made, just demonstrating take-offs and landings in the Vigi.

If you want to see some footage of the real thing, check out A3JVigilante.org. Also, the Alexis Parkinn Aviation Video page has some rare footage of the A-5A (A-3J) undergoing carrier trials. Scroll toward the bottom of this page to see. And check out the trailer for Rocket Aero's Vigilante DVD.

This site offers alot of info on the RA-5C, including personal accounts of flying it over Vietnam.

There is an RA-5C adjustment-mod for WOV too! Once I get through some campaigns with the various stock aircraft (and maybe have a go at flying for the VPAF) I'm going to fly an entire recce campaign with this mod, using some enhancements made by the author, whose blog contains some interesting info. Heres a shot of the A-5B mod adjusted to the RA-C5 configuration. Note the strobe and centreline recon pod.

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

RAN Campaign with HMAS Melbourne

The availability of a an RAN Melbourne add-on was one of the clinching attractions for me, when choosing this sim. I'm old enough (just!) to remember seeing this carrier, so simulating it is a lot of fun. The mod, by Gramps and Co. (see links at left), actually comes with a whole task force but I chose to slim things down, including just the Melbourne in my campaign.

Click on the image to see it at 800x600 resolution

I should mention at this point that my posts are running about 3 weeks behind when I actually take these screen shots, hence the lack of Service pack 4 enhancements (volumetric 3d clouds etc) visible in the earlier shots. From here on in the shots, and now video, will be up to the SP4 standard. Here's a video I took of an A4G - Melbourne launch and flight. I think It shows off the new 3D clouds nicely.

Mig Killing in the F-8 Crusader

Well, I did say I was going to even the score...

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I've had an eye on Wings Over Vietnam and Strike Fighters: Project One (which WOV originates from and shares a game-engine with, and therefore mods too) for a while given that they're the only real option for fans of the 1960s fast movers. Well, first impressions are A++!!! This sim is more fun than I'd anticipated, and I anticipated some fun!. Given the modding community that exists behind these titles the possibilities are vast. For anyone with even an average ability to edit text files and discern the basic logic and structure of ini files, the possibilities are essentially endless. I've also had the good fortune of getting involved with this sim at a time when its fourth service pack has been released, adding a number of new enhancements.

Why a WOV blog?

This sim is undoubtedly impressive, and all the more so when combined with the work of the modding community. That said, I had real difficulty, when tying to reach a decision on purchasing, in getting an accurate sense of what the game would be like. Of course you can see screenshots on various sites but most of the reviews around the web are out of date and inaccurate, predating the service packs which upgraded the game and the mods which have enhanced it. So, with all this in mind I'm going to keep this blog, for at least my initial phase of enthusiasm with this sim, and with screenshots and videos hopefully provide an extra glimpse of the WOV/SFP1 world for the uninitiated.

Here's some shots from my first flights, and my first scrap with a Mig, from which I came off second best. I'll even the score!

Click on an image to see it at 800x600 resolution

Note, the screen shots featured on this blog present a modded installation of Wings Over Vietnam.
